Pay It Forward

The joy of being Extreme Community Makeover is we get to hear stories of how volunteering changed someone's life and changed their perspective. We are blessed to help people with their practical needs, resulting in a softening of a heart and a desire to give back.

ECM recipients, Michaela and Brian, decided to pay it forward. They had work done on their front yard and wanted to help someone else out. "They acted like it was their yard. I mean, they put that much pride into it! That's what instilled in us to say, hey we need to give back and show the same thing to help some other family or help out this organization," says Brian. Giving back is what this is all about. ECM is happy to see Denver being transformed by bringing neighbors together and building up our communities, one block at a time.

All About the Volunteers

Fall is here and ECM is approaching the home stretch to the end of our season. However, the energy amongst the volunteers indicated they were all in and very glad to be giving on this day. The day was focused on alley clean up, and our volunteers!

Volunteering is defined as, "a person who performs a service willingly and without pay." Willingly was certainly the attitude of the volunteers. Today, I personally focused on our ECM volunteers: Cherry Creek High School’s Big Sisters, Regis Jesuit Day for Others, Westwood Unidos, and our ECM Board of Directors. It was an eclectic community of people. However, everyone showed up with the same attitude and energy with enthusiasm for their service to our Denver neighborhoods, for their own communities, and for each other.
Once again, I was filled with pride for my fellow human beings. Pastor James’ energy was contagious as he shared his plans for creating stronger community involvement in the Westwood neighborhood. He said it is not like the old days where people came to the church, instead pastors need to go out into the community and inspire others to come to the church.
I was also impressed with the young ladies with Cherry Creek H.S. - Big Sisters. Maya, the team leader, spoke about all the other organizations she and her group have worked with. She said she would like to get The National Honor Society group involved in the ECM efforts, as well. These ladies focused on their task with ease and a smile.
Rebecca Thompson, a mother of student at Regis High School, was working with her sons and her husband. They all happily went about their work. Rebecca said that every year more than 900 volunteers in the Regis community come together for Regis Jesuit Day for Others. She said this was an opportunity to meet other families at the school, and to meet new people at the projects they worked out. She explained that this work has inspired her to go back to her own neighborhood to see what kind of support they needed. Rebecca hopes that volunteering will plant a seed in their children to want to continue to help others the rest of their lives. Regis requires their students to graduate with a number of service hours to their community. Volunteering is something both Rebecca and her husband said is rewarding and they look forward to the event every year.
Each of my work days with ECM has deepened my respect and gratitude for this work, and especially my faith in people. I am continually shown the good in others, the need and want for community and connection, and the inspiration that comes from spending time with the residents and volunteers. Thank you, again, volunteers for your beautiful spirits and for your service!

Volunteering with Co-workers

One of the best ways to bond with your co-workers is by volunteering. Volunteering helps build teamwork by fostering stronger relationships among colleagues. It's also proven that volunteering lowers stress levels in individuals and this can contribute to higher productivity when employees are working. In addition, when volunteer activities are supported by employers, employees tend to have a more positive feelings towards their workplace.

Sarah Schmidt, with the PICU Sunshine with Children's Hospital Colorado, knows all the benefits of volunteering, plus more. She has been coordinating the volunteer activities for the PICU unit for a couple years now. "We did a different neighborhood this year. So, it was neat to see the contrast. We had two new people this year who haven't volunteered. And, just hearing them talk at work, they had an absolutely great time with the neighborhood. They really enjoyed the community involvement," expresses Sarah.

The ECM Work Day for the PICU unit was a success! The team got to bond and enjoy getting to know each other better, all the while lending a hand to a deserving La Alma/Lincoln Park resident. "PICU Sunshine will definitely be volunteering again next year. We've had two great experiences, two back-to-back summers. And, we're going to try and get more and more people involved every time we're there. We see the positivity it has on the community," says Sarah.

September Extreme Endeavors: A Spotlight on Volunteers

Since volunteers are the backbone of what makes Extreme Community Makeover possible, I thought it would be neat to highlight some of our incredible volunteers so we can learn more about why people choose to get involved in ECM, as well as how they are making an impact right here in Denver. The Gonzales family is making memories as a family as they volunteer together, which you can read more about here. And Daron gained experience through volunteering that helped her reach career goals, which you can read about here. Check out how you can volunteer with ECM this month and who knows, maybe we'll do a Volunteer Spotlight article on you someday!
Sincerely,
Angela Bomgaars

Recycled Made into Supercool

We've all been there at one time or another, it's not exactly broken, but I just don't know what to do with it. So, throwing it away seems like the most hassle free option. Nowadays, dumpster diving has become a thing. People are making thousands from their diving hobby. Some people even do dumpster diving as a full-time profession. There are many interesting and sometimes profitable items to be found in your neighbor's trash. And, even if not a lucrative gain, there are unique treasures to be found that can become a special keepsake. As they say, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

One of Extreme Community Makeover's volunteers was faced with this dilemma. Brianne is on the Supplies Team and is accustomed to paying attention to what tools and items are needed to finish a project. Her radar was up when she struck a conversation with a resident unloading trash into a dumpster. The resident explained she wanted to keep the pallets she was putting into the trash and even pondered doing a project with them, but she just did not have the time. Brianne jumped at the opportunity and decided to take on the challenge. In her mind's eye, these left over pallets would become a supercool bench, once they were rescued from the dumpster.

With Google, all things are possible. Brianne googled a tutorial on how to make a pallet bench and got working. Pulling the pallets apart she kept the best pieces, pulled out the nails, sanded them, cut to the desired size and nailed them together. She then found some left over spray paint for the top and white-washed the bottom. And, if that was not resourceful enough, Brianne even borrowed the necessary tools for her pallet bench project from the Denver Tool Library.

"I've been volunteering a lot on the ECM Work Days. So, I've gotten better at doing different projects. I definitely would not think I'd have the skills to do this project. However, I decided to give this a try and I found out I'm more crafty than I thought I was," says Brianne. She is very happy with her recycled pallet bench. It makes a nice addition to her home's entry hallway on the way to the back courtyard. Brianne now has a story behind this great piece of furniture that she created.

Sometimes all it takes is a little incentive and a little effort to create a masterpiece and in return you help your neighborhood and the planet become greener. So, keep a lookout for your next supercool recycling project!

Volunteer Spotlight - Experience Is Golden

Daron is one of those people whose bright smile and attitude makes you feel at ease. Humbly, she gives thanks to Extreme Community Makeover for opening doors for her career path. Currently, she is the Corporate Event Planner for the nonprofit Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Alliance. She is thankful to be in a job that is a perfect fit. Daron can remember a time, after graduating college, when she did not have the experience she needed to move her towards her desired career path in event planning. That is when Extreme Community Makeover came along.

The ECM Fun Day Event is a success Daron now looks back on. This event is a volunteer appreciation BBQ and Daron remembers planning this annual event in its early stages. Fundraising campaigns, event planning, admin work, and helping with Saturday Work Days kept her busy throughout the internship. The chance to see the ins and outs of the nonprofit world was invaluable to Daron. She planned events and fundraising campaigns from start to finish. With this experience, she landed a job with Colorado Biz Magazine as their Event Coordinator; leading Daron to her current position with Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Alliance.

"At the end of the day, I owe my career success to Angela. She took a chance on me and gave me a break. She was so encouraging," graciously says Daron. She found out about the internship with ECM through an internship nonprofit matchmaker. Immediately, Daron knew it would be a good fit. She had the opportunity to see people's lives changed and their communities transformed. She sensed that the people involved with ECM truly cared. She felt she was with like-minded people.

Volunteering gives you a new perspective on life. It can change your heart and allow you to see people and your community in a new way. For Daron, it not only did all these things, but also gave her a stepping stone into gaining valuable skills to reach her career dreams. Sometimes, we need to give a little in order to gain a little. So whether, you want to gain a new friend, gain a new perspective, gain a new skill, etc. consider giving of yourself through volunteering.

A true testimony to the value and structure of Extreme Community Makeover is that Daron still volunteers with ECM. Angela and the folks at ECM have become family to Daron. "It's truly inspiring how Angela cares and all the good work she does," says Daron with a smile.

Back to School Safety

It's back to school time and kids are heading out the door to join their classmates. In all the back to school fun, remember some general safety tips for school travel in your neighborhood. Make sure to talk to your child about these safety tips.

Travel Tips

School Bus

  • If your child’s school bus has lap/shoulder seat belts, make sure your child uses one at all times when in the bus
  • Do not move around on the bus
  • Check to see that no other traffic is coming before crossing
  • Always remain in clear view of the bus driver
  • Teach children the proper way to get on and off the bus

Car

  • Wear a seat belt or age and size appropriate car safety seat or booster seat
  • All children under 13 years of age should ride in the rear seat of vehicles
  • Do not allow your teen to drive while eating, drinking, or talking on a cell phone

Bike

  • Always wear a bicycle helmet
  • Ride on the right, in the same direction as auto traffic
  • Use appropriate hand signals
  • Respect traffic lights, stop signs and rules of the road (teach them the rules of the road)
  • Wear bright color clothing to increase visibility

Walking to School

  • A safe route with well-trained adult crossing guards at every intersection
  • Consider whether or not your child is ready to walk to school without adult supervision
  • Bright colored clothing will make your child more visible to drivers
  • Talk to your child about stranger danger

General Tips

  • Drawstrings at the waist or bottom of jackets should extend no more than 3 inches to prevent catching in car and school bus doors or getting caught on playground equipment
  • Check the surfaces around playground equipment at schools and parks
  • Make sure the child's backpack is the appropriate size (never wider or longer than your child's torso and never hanging more than 4 inches below the waist)
  • Buy a backpack with reflective material

Take the Food Recovery Challenge

Did you know that roughly 37 million tons of food was wasted in the United States in 2013, and that 95 percent of this material was thrown away? Through the Food Recovery Challenge, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is partnering with organizations and businesses in order to prevent and reduce wasted food and encouraging consumers to reduce their waste as well. By participating in the Food Recovery Challenge, you can save money, protect the environment and help your community by purchasing less, donating your extra food, and composting.

If your business or organization is looking to reduce wasted food through prevention, donation, or composting, consider becoming an official Food Recovery Challenge program participant. Program participants receive free technical assistance and a listing on the national EPA participant page. For more information and to join this challenge, visit epa.gov/foodrecoverychallenge/.

There are many ways that individuals can participate in the Food Recovery Challenge. Here are some quick tips on how to reduce wasted food in your home:
þ  Shop your refrigerator first! Cook or eat what you already have at home before buying more.
þ  Plan your menu before you go shopping and buy only those things on your menu.
þ  Buy only what you realistically need and will use. Buying in bulk only saves money if you are able to use the food before it spoils.
þ  If safe and healthy to do so, use the edible parts of food that you normally do not eat. For example, stale bread can be used to make croutons, beet tops can be sautéed for a delicious side dish, and vegetable scraps can be made into stock.
þ  Find out how to store fruits and vegetables so they stay fresh longer inside or outside your refrigerator.
þ  Freeze, preserve, or can your surplus fruits and vegetables - especially abundant seasonal produce.
þ  Compost food scraps rather than throwing them away. Simply sign up for the Denver Composts program (if your home is eligible) or learn how to compost in your own back yard by taking a free Learn to Compostclass, offered May through October. Visit DenverGov.org/DenverRecycles or call 311 (720-913-1311) to learn more about both compost options.
þ  Donate nutritious, safe, and untouched food to food banks to help those in need.
þ  At restaurants, order only what you can finish by asking about portion sizes and being aware of side dishes included with entrees. Take any leftovers home with you and eat them as part of your next meal.

Reducing wasted food will save you money, reduce methane emissions and lower your carbon footprint, conserve energy and resources, and support your community.  Visit the EPA at epa.gov/foodrecoverychallenge/  for more information on how to start reducing your waste today!

Volunteer Spotlight - Family Time

We all know that volunteering is good for the soul. It brings a smile to those around us and helps transform our communities. Extreme Community Makeover has over 3,500 volunteers per year. We are privileged to meet wonderful people who are making a difference in our communities and reshaping lives.

The Gonzales Family at
ECM Fun Day, 2014

The Gonzales Family has been with Extreme Community Makeover for over seven years. Tammy and Charles have been volunteering with their two kids, Ethan and Ivy, on a regular basis. To them, giving their time to lend a helping hand is a great opportunity to spend time together as a family and helps them to bond. "Volunteering has taught me to work better with my family and with the community," says daughter Ivy. And, they would all agree that, volunteering not only helps to strengthen them as a family, but it also is a lot of fun.

One fond memory is of a Barnum resident Ginger. Ginger was one of those people that you just don't forget. She had spunk and charm. They enjoyed hanging out with Ginger and she truly touched them as a family. Ginger passed away a few months ago, but she will remain with them as a family and they are thankful to have enjoyed getting to know such a wonderful lady.
Ginger & Ivy
Extreme Community Makeover provides a unique opportunity for families, groups and individuals to get out into their communities and make a difference. The Gonzales family is grateful for their experience with ECM and they will continue to put a smile on someone's face by giving their time through volunteering.

Volunteering on July 25, 2015

ECM has plenty of opportunities for you and your family to volunteer. The next Works Days are Saturday August 8, Saturday August 22, and Saturday September 12. And, you can check out our fall schedule by viewing our calendar.
