Red Rocks Church Youth

Red Rocks Church joined in on the extreme community makeover on June 16 & 17, 2015. The church had around 300 youth volunteers!

Westwood Resident Testimonials:

"I really like the kids. They are really cool. It's awesome that I can get some help. They're doing a lot of yard work, doing weeds, cutting the dead rose bushes, fixing my gate where I can open it without hurting my arm because it's hard for me to open and shut. Painting my house is the biggest thing. My house will look brand new almost." ~Susan

"They helped me paint and cut the grass, cut down a bush and get rid of some weeds. It was a real big help because of the moisture. It just grew so fast." ~Mark

Today they came by in the morning to trim up our tree. I was very appreciative. Thank you for all that hard work. You were here early. You guys cleaned up everything which was amazing. Thank you for all the help and thank you for making our community look cleaner and better." ~Isaac

"This has been a really great help. The Extreme Community Makeover has saved us a lot of time with a lot of stuff we really could not get done ourselves and we really appreciate it. And, we want to say God bless to all the kids that came and helped us today." ~Cindy

I appreciate very much Extreme Community Makeover for helping me clean my yard. Thank you again Extreme Community Makeover." ~Rodrigo

Grasscycling

Lose the Bag and Leave the Grass

Clippings on the Lawn!

Grasscycling is the practice of leaving grass clippings on your
lawn when mowing, instead of  bagging them. It’s the natural
way to recycle grass clippings and provide your lawn with the
valuable nutrients and water that it needs.

Why GrassCycle?

MAKE LESS TRASH
Up to 37% of what Denver residents put in the trash during the
growing season is yard waste which is predominantly grass
clippings. You can significantly reduce your spring and summer
waste just by GrassCycling.

SAVE MONEY
Save money on water, fertilizer, cost of bags and disposal.

ENJOY A HEALTHIER LAWN
GrassCycling is an easy way to a healthy lawn and a great way
to recycle valuable nutrients for free. Clippings break down quickly
and slowly release nutrients like nitrogen back into the soil beneath your
lawn.

SAVE WATER
Grass clippings left on your lawn will shade grass roots and
help keep the soil cool. And because grass clippings are made
up of more than 80% water, they return valuable moisture to the
soil which means less watering for you to do.

REDUCE YOUR WORK
GrassCycling can drastically reduce the time you spend on
lawn care by saving you from the hassle
of raking, bagging and disposing of grass clippings.

REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS
Burying grass clippings in a landfill contributes to the
generation of methane, a greenhouse gas 21times more potent
in its heat trapping capabilities than carbon dioxide.

Don’t bag it.
Leave clippings on lawn.
And relax.

1. Mow your lawn when it’s dry.
2. Keep your mower blades sharp.
3. Follow the “1/3 Rule” – mow your lawn often enough so that
no more than 1/3 of the length of the grass blade is cut and left
on the lawn. Lawns are most healthy when mowed to a height of
2 ½ to 3 inches.

Do I need a special mower?

You can GrassCycle with any mower (push, electric, gas or mulching).
Remove the mower collection bag to allow clippings to drop on the
lawn. If your mower does not have a safety flap covering the opening
where the bag fits into the chute, then it is important that you purchase a
retrofit kit from your hardware store. If you use a landscape service,
ask them to leave the clippings on your lawn.

Will GrassCycling cause thatch and make my lawn look bad?

GrassCycling does not cause thatch buildup. Research has
shown that shallow roots caused by overwatering and over
fertilizing are the primary cause of thatch build up, not grass clippings.
The short clippings from regular mowing will decompose quickly and
will not cover the grass surface or cause thatch.

June's Industry Work Week

Every year, in the month of June, ECM hosts an Industry Work Week. The idea behind the Industry Work Week (one hosted on a Tuesday and the other hosted on a Thursday) is to bring a valuable opportunity for industry leaders to connect with colleagues and other professionals, while volunteering together.

This year, ECM featured these industries:
  • Real Estate Professionals
  • Title Companies
  • Lending Companies
Here are stories from some of the Industry Work Day volunteers:

We have multiple offices, and I was able to meet people that I would not normally come in contact with. You realize that everyone there is supporting the same cause, and has the same outlook on serving others. It brings you together in a special way.

The homeowner was so grateful. She came out and took photos of the work being done. Her kindness fueled us on, and helped us want to deliver a great redone yard!

~Nate Postlewait
Broker Associate, LIV Sotheby's International Realty

We were able to bring employees from different offices and clients of ours. I learned that sometimes we have a preconceived notion of the type of people that live in these communities that is not correct. There are elderly and hard-working people in these communities that just need a helping hand.

This really says something about the culture of our overall company because of our employees. It says that we like making a difference and helping others. Our team leads, not only in our company, but also in these types of events. It makes us stand out amongst other companies in our industry and it’s been a great thing to talk about when we interview new hires.

~Connie Malonson
Regional Vice-President, Heritage Title Company

PorchLight decided to participate in an ECM work day because a big part of our company philosophy is giving back to the community. Doing a work day together is a great way to actively be a part of things and work together as a team. It was great to meet Dan, the homeowner, and talk with him and spend the day working alongside him. That is what is special about ECM, getting out there in the community and helping.

In real estate, everyone is on their own schedule and working with clients, but not necessarily spending time with agents like in a normal office setting. A work day really allows you to spend the day with those you work with and get to know them on a personal level. Working together, talking, laughing, eating lunch, sharing stories and, of course, looking at the completed task at the end of the day is a perfect team building activity.
